The role of tryptophan in the nutrition of dogs on nicotinic acid-deficient diets.

چکیده
It has now been definitely established that there exists an interchangeability of nicotinic acid and tryptophan in the nutrition of some animals on diets deficient in the vitamin and containing only suboptimal amounts of the amino acid (1-S). Because the dog has been employed as the experimental animal in the classical investigations on nicotinic acid deficiency, it seemed of interest to determine whether this same nicotinic acid-tryptophan relationship exists for this species. The results of these nutrition experiments, together with those obtained in the study of the urinary excretion of some nicotinic acid derivatives under these experimental conditions, are presented here.

Effect of Tryptophan Supplementation in Protein Deficient Diets on Performance, Gut Development and Immune Responses in Broiler Chickens
The current trial was conducted to investigate effects of tryptophan (Trp) supplementation in crude protein (CP) deficient diets on performance, gut development and immune responses in broiler chickens. A total of 420 day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were assigned to one of 6 dietary treatments, comprising 5 replicates in a completely randomized design including: 1) control diet (CTL) (diet ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Some Amino Acids on the Growth and Nicotinic Acid Storage of Rats on Low Casein Diets*
Krehl et al. (1, 2) have observed that the inclusion of large amounts of corn grits in a low protein diet produced a growth retardation in rats, which was corrected by the addition of either nicot, inic acid or L-tryptophan. The beneficial action of the amino acid is now attributed to its role as a biological precursor of nicotinic acid (3-5). It is not necessary to postulate the existence of a ...
متن کاملUrinary excretion of nicotinic acid and N-methyl-nicotinamide by rats fed tryptophan and diets deficient in various B vitamins.
The inability of vitamin Be-deficient rats and mice to convert dietary tryptophan to nicotinic acid and its metabolites has been observed by several workers (l-4). Further, when vitamin Be supplements were given to rats previously deficient in the vitamin, the animals usually recovered the ability to transform tryptophan into nicotinic acid metabolites, although the response was apparently infl...
متن کاملEffect of Dietary Tryptophan Imbalance upon the Metabolism of Tryptophan and Nicotinic Acid in Man*
Growth of animals receiving diets low in protein and nicotinic acid may be retarded by the addition of corn products (l-4), of certain amino acids (5-9), or of proteins deficient in tryptophan (8-11). This inhibition, which is obtained with diets relatively deficient in tryptophan, can be overcome by the administration of nicotinic acid or of tryptophan (l-11). It has been suggested that this d...
متن کاملThe effect of alkaline hydrolysis of maize on the availability of its nicotinic acid to the pig.
The connexion between pellagra and maize consumption has occupied the interest of many workers for a number of years. It has been suggested that maize owes its pellagragenic property to an imbalance of amino-acids, tryptophan being especially low. This imbalance was said to increase the need for nicotinic acid (Krehl, Henderson, de la Huerga & Elvehjem, 1946; Krehl, 1949). The presence of a ‘to...
